Our Principal's Welcome
Hello and welcome to the Stroudsburg Middle School. Our building houses approximately 1,300 fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. It is by far one of the most technically advanced buildings with the most beautiful panoramic view of the Delaware Water Gap. Our staff utilizes a team approach to provide our students with a "small school within a school" learning environment that fosters our buildings vision.
"The Mountie Middle School is an
accepting
enjoyable
learning community that promotes
respect
responsibility &
individual success".
At a crucial developmental stage in our students' lives, our building offers the right balance of focus on
academic rigor
social/character development
physical fitness.
The staff utilizes many monthly positive reinforcements that assist us in meeting our vision's goals and objectives.
Mountie moment cards are saved by students when they are caught in the act of good decision making. Through the support of local community business donations, positive reinforcement occurs through monthly lotteries on the last Friday of each month. Students quickly learn that in order to win, you must be " in it." Mountie money tickets support our focus on academics. As students exhibit good work ethics, and develop individual pride in their achievement, they earn Mountie money to use in our school store. The school store sells multiple child friendly merchandise that good students typically utilize to be successful.
Fitness Friday is another incentive every student enjoys and embraces. Physical wellness here at the middle school involves daily walks of our expansive 315,000 square foot building, daily recess on our 9 acre field, and a Friday celebration of fitness during gym class where students and staff rotate through multiple stations that reinforce a healthy, strong body/strong mind concept.
The SMS fosters leadership in our students by electing a Student Council which meets one day out of every six day cycle. The advisors for Student Council are Mrs. Manter, Ms. Nagle, and Mrs. Rusk. Council members are selected by their homeroom teachers. One student is selected from each 5th, 6th, and 7th grade homeroom. Elected representatives then attend meetings and are involved in many programs around and within the Stroudsburg School Community.
In conclusion, welcome to the Stroudsburg Middle School, "A great place to be someone."
Mrs. Karen O. Thomson
Middle School Activities
Please note that the dates and times of these activities are determined by the advisors and activity director. Activities are seasonal, and students will be given notices to take home once an activity begins. Here are the activities for the fall:
Advisor/Advisee Program
All students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade participate in our middle school advisor/advisee program. During this 50 minute session, students meet with other students to discuss current issues and topics that middle school students face on a regular basis. Each month is dedicated to a monthly theme.
The advisor/advisee session is totally dedicated to students working together in a safe and comfortable environment to gain additional knowledge and information about the issue being discussed. This year we are proud to begin a new program through the Tiger Woods Foundation. In this program students will do a variety of interesting things:
Read and talk about leadership and being a
team player.
Investigate what students truly like to do.
Students will learn how to turn their hopes and dreams into
achievable goals.
Students will carry out a Volunteer Service Project.
Students will explore some career choices that fit with the students'
interest and talents.
In a nutshell, this program helps students build qualities like initiative, leadership, and a positive attitude!
